Why Learn Prompt Engineering

The magic of prompt engineering goes beyond the coding realm—it's a key that unlocks the door for both developers and everyday users to effortlessly shape applications using LLM APIs. By delving into prompt engineering, not just developers but general end users as well can wield the power to guide language models with finesse, ensuring outputs that are not only precise but also relevant. In this blog, we're demystifying the art of prompt engineering, with a spotlight on best practices finely tuned for software development using Instruction Tuned LLMs. Ready to explore the wizardry behind prompt engineering? Let's dive in!

Aim

My primary goal here is to arm developers and a broader audience, including those not deeply immersed in the tech realm, with the knowledge and techniques necessary to effortlessly craft clear and impactful instructions for LLMs. By adhering to and embracing the best practices we'll uncover, I want you to feel the ability to unlock the full potential of these models. Whether you're a seasoned coder or just dipping your toes into the tech waters, my aim is to guide you towards outcomes that aren't just accurate but truly valuable for your applications. So, join me on this journey, where prompt engineering becomes a skill that everyone can master, reshaping the way we interact with language models!

Before we delve into prompt engineering, let's get a brief overview of LLMS. They're divided into two types:

  1. Base LLM: Predicts the next word based on training data. For example, given "The climate is very," it might complete with "beautiful" or "hot."

  2. Instruction Tuned LLM: Trained to follow instructions. For instance, asking "Capital of India" might prompt the response "Delhi."

As most applications use the second type, let's focus on the best practices for Instruction Tuned LLMS.

Without further ado, let's jump into the principles.

First principle: write clear and specific instructions

Let's keep it simple. Write clear and specific instructions by expressing what you want the model to do. Longer prompts often provide more clarity and context, leading to detailed and relevant outputs. Use delimiters, like <> or "", to indicate distinct parts of the input.

Lets see what are the different tactics we can use in implementing the first principle.

Use delimiters to clearly indicate the parts of input

  • Delimiters can be anything like: ```, """, < >, <tag> </tag>,

In the below example we are asking the model to summarize the input in the delimiters. This also has an added advantage as it provide protection against the prompt injections as it will consider only the text as the input.

Ask for structured Output

While building applications in many instances you require the output of the LLM in JSON or HTML which can be used or incorporated into the application or Dashboard.

Ask model to check for conditions are satisfied

While building applications instructing the language the model to check whether conditions are satisfied. So, if the task makes assumptions that aren't necessarily satisfied, then we can tell the model to check these assumptions

Few shot prompting

Use few-shot prompting by providing examples before the actual task to guide the model.

Principle 2: Give the model time to think

Just like you wouldn't rush a person answering a complex question, don't rush the model. Reframe queries to request a series of relevant reasoning before the final answer. This ensures the model doesn't make hasty and potentially incorrect conclusions.

Specify the steps required to complete the task

Ask for the same steps and specify the format, making it easier for model to understand context. So that model will follow the format you provide.

Ask the model to workout its own solution before coming to conclusion

Encourage the model to think and solve the problem thoroughly before giving a final answer.

LLM limitations

When developing applications with LLMS, it's crucial to understand their limitations. While they've seen vast amounts of information, they don't know the boundaries of their knowledge perfectly. They might make up answers or hallucinate. However, hallucinations aren't always bad – they can bring diversity to projects, especially for artists.
